Extra! Extra! Read All About It! (January 2011 CiF Watch Newsletter)

CiF Watch is proud to introduce the inaugural edition of our E-Newsletter.

This monthly update will include highlights from some of our most important posts; recent press about CiF Watch; and will attempt to not only keep you informed on our work combating anti-Semitism at the Guardian, but will provide you with suggestions on what you can do to actively participate in this vital mission.

About CiF Watch

CiF Watch is a media monitor dedicated to tracking antisemitism and the assault on Israel’s legitimacy in the UK Guardian’s “Comment is Free” blog (also known as “CiF”).

New Year’s Message from Managing Editor, Adam Levick

Friends,

We wish to usher in the new year with our first edition of a regular feature, the CiF Watch newsletter.

CiF Watch has come a long way over the past year and a half from a voluntary group-run blog to a leading professional media monitoring site.

Staying true to its mission, CiF Watch has consistently exposed how the Guardian, which styles itself as the world’s leading liberal voice, has played a leading role in mainstreaming the delegitimization of Israel.

Like all relatively new organizations, CiF Watch is a work in progress, and in addtion to inviting you to comment (freely!) beneath the line, we are always open to your ideas and suggestions. So feel free to drop us a line anytime.

Recent Highlights

Harriet Sherwood – a Six-Month Review
We recently published a review of Guardian Jerusalem correspondent Harriet Sherwood’s first six months of articles.  Our empirical analysis demonstrated that Sherwood’s performance since taking over the new position has fallen well short of her own stated goals of providing “balanced coverage” of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Indeed, the CiF Watch report, citing 138 relevant articles, clearly demonstrated Sherwood’s consistent and egregious bias against Israel, and her near silence on the serious issues of terrorism, antisemitism and incitement by the Palestinians. To read the full review click here.

245 Guardian Readers to Shut-Up about Iranian Antisemitism
In the world of Antisemtism 2.0, a defining feature of what we witness is how the Guardian comment threads, though moderated, provide a fertile ground for mainstreaming anti-Jewish hate speech in one of the most popular online forums in the world. CiF Watch regularly monitors the comment threads and recently came across a commenter that told Jews to shut up about Ahmadinejad’s antisemitism, a comment that was endorsed by another 245 Guardian readers. Guardian’s Assistant Editor Writes Apologia for Genocidal Leader
The Guardian’s anti-Israel bigotry is not occuring in an ideological vacuum and is very much linked to what we call the Guardian World View which is characterized by an anti-Western and post-nationalist ideology mired in moral and cultural relativism. The full extent of this was on display in an article by Simon Tisdall, the Guardian’s assistant editor, who wrote an apologia about Sudan’s genocidal leader, Omar al-Bashir. Viva Dublina!
At CiF Watch, we are strong believers that there is nothing like humor and ridicule of the enemy to communicate our message. The effect of this was starkly demonstrated with the massively popular “We Con the World” video by Caroline Glick’s Latma. In a similar vein, we recently published a satire on an Israeli flotilla bound for Dublin, Viva Dublina. For some light entertainment, click here.

Recent Press

CiF Watch Cited in Jerusalem Post
In a recent article on Reut’s report on London as the main hub of delegitimization, Adam Levick, CiF Watch’s managing editor, commented in the Jerusalem Post on how there is a critical need in the Jewish community in the UK to understand the network-based response required to defeat delegitmization. In fact, CiF Watch has already been implementing key recommendations of Reut and stands ready to cooperate with other groups in the UK that are willing to confront delegitimization in a pro-active and unapologetic manner.
