The Israel Security Agency’s report on terror attacks (Hebrew) during February 2016 shows that throughout the month a total of 155 incidents took place: 107 in Judea & Samaria, 42 in Jerusalem, four inside the ‘green line’ and two incidents originating from the Gaza Strip.
The agency recorded 117 attacks with petrol bombs, ten shooting attacks, 19 attacks using explosive devices and 9 stabbing attacks. Three Israelis were killed during February and eleven people (8 civilians and 3 members of the security forces) were wounded.
The BBC News website produced reports on all three of the fatal attacks: the February 3rd attack at Damascus Gate in which Cpl Hadar Cohen was shot and killed, the February 18th attack at Sha’ar Binyamin in which off-duty soldier Tuvia Yanai Weissman was murdered and the February 24th attack at Gush Etzion Junction in which Eliav Gelman was killed. All three of the victims were named in those reports but little additional personalizing information was provided.
A report concerning four attacks which took place on February 14th also included a brief reference to an additional attempted attack which took place the previous day. An attempted attack on February 1st was briefly mentioned in an article on another topic.
None of the four attacks which took place within the ‘green line’ received any coverage on the BBC News website: a stabbing in Ramle on February 4th and another attack in the same city on February 8th, a stabbing in Rahat on February 6th and a stabbing in Ashkelon on February 7th. The February 26th attack in Ma’ale Adumim was likewise ignored, together with – among others – the February 9th attack in Neve Daniel and a stabbing attack in Jerusalem on February 19th.
In conclusion, the BBC News website covered nine of the 155 attacks which took place during February 2016 – i.e. 5.8% – and 100% of the Israeli fatalities were reported. Since the beginning of the year, coverage of the terror attacks which actually took place stands at 5.86%.
