1) At the INSS, Udi Dekel analyses ‘The Struggle for De Facto Sovereignty over the Temple Mount’.
“The fighting over al-Aqsa and the fake information about Israel’s intentions to change the arrangements regarding prayers at the compound are a motivating force for individuals and groups, the majority of them lacking any organizational affiliation, to commit murderous attacks on Israeli civilians. The axe attack in Elad at the end of Independence Day marked the continuation of the struggle over al-Aqsa, even after Ramadan, with the mobilization to defend it motivating young Palestinians to answer the call of the Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar, to carry out terrorist attacks with whatever is at hand – a gun, knife, or axe. Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum further clarified that “the action in Elad was a brave act of heroism and a natural response to the violations of the occupation of the al-Aqsa Mosque.””
2) The International Legal Forum has published a report on the members of the UNHRC commission of inquiry which is expected to publish its report in the near future.
“On July 22, 2021, it was announced that former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem (Navi) Pillay (South Africa) would chair the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC)’s Commission of Inquiry “on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel.” The UNHRC also announced that Miloon Kothari (India) and Chris Sidoti (Australia) would serve as committee members. The formation of the Commission of Inquiry was decided during a May 27, 2021 UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session, ostensibly in the wake of Israel’s self-defensive campaign against Palestinian Hamas terror group in May 2021.”
3) The ITIC analyses the possible implications of the recent ISIS attack in the Sinai Peninsula.
“On the morning of May 7, 2022, a group of operatives of ISIS’s Sinai Province attacked a military post securing a water pumping facility in the northwestern Sinai Peninsula, about 26 km east of the Suez Canal. According to the Egyptian army spokesman, the Egyptian security forces thwarted an attack by Salafist-jihadi operatives directed at the facility. An officer and 16 soldiers were killed. This was the largest attack carried out by ISIS operatives in the Sinai Peninsula since July 2020. […]
The attack once again exposes the difficulties faced by the Egyptian army in coping with the operatives of ISIS’s Sinai Province who, despite the severe blows they suffered in the past year, manage to continue striking the Egyptian security forces, the militias supporting them and the local residents.”
