Guardian corrects erroneous Oct. 7th Israeli death count

A Guardian article by their Economics editor Larry Elliott (‘Utter ruin’: Gaza economy would take 350 years to return to pre-conflict level, UN says, Oct. 22) included the false claim that roughly 1,000 Israelis were killed on Oct. 7th.

In a report on the economic costs of the war prepared by its trade and development wing (Unctad), the UN said the fighting since Hamas killed more than 1,000 Israelis on 7 October last year had devastated the remnants of Gaza’s economy and infrastructure.

We complained to the Guardian, noting that the correct number is over 1,200, and that even the Guardian article linked to the sentence above cites the accurate number.

Our complaint was upheld, and the sentence amended:

In a report on the economic costs of the war prepared by its trade and development wing (Unctad), the UN said the fighting since Hamas killed more than 1,200 people in Israel on 7 October last year had devastated the remnants of Gaza’s economy and infrastructure.

The following editor’s note was added, noting the correction.

Additionally, we’re looking into the UN report which the article is based on, and hope to post about it during the week.
