On December 26th the BBC News website published a report now credited to Raffi Berg and Emir Nader, with “[a]dditional reporting by Jaroslav Lukiv”.

The original headline of that report read “Five Gaza journalists killed in Israeli strike”. Around four and a half hours later – perhaps as a result of criticism – that headline was amended and it now reads “Five Gaza journalists killed in Israeli strike targeting armed group”.
The version of the report currently available online begins by amplifying claims made by a terrorist organisation’s media arm.
“A Palestinian TV channel says five of its journalists have been killed in an Israeli strike in the central Gaza Strip.
They were in a Quds Today van parked outside al-Awda hospital, where the wife of one of the journalists was about to give birth, in the central Nuseirat refugee camp.
The channel posted a video of what it said was the burning vehicle with “press” signage on the back doors.”
Only in paragraph six are readers told of the connection between that “Palestinian TV channel” and the Iran-backed terrorist organisation which the BBC tepidly chooses to portray as an “armed group” despite it having been proscribed by the UK government twenty-three years ago.

“Quds Today is affiliated with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), an armed group that took part in the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel. The unprecedented attack triggered the war in Gaza. The TV channel is believed to receive funding from the group.”
The report tells readers that:
“The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had targeted “Islamic Jihad operatives posing as journalists” and that steps were taken to avoid harming civilians.”
And later:
“The Israeli military named the five killed as Ibrahim Jamal Ibrahim Al-Sheikh Ali; Faisal Abdallah Muhammad Abu Qamsan; Mohammed Ayad Khamis al-Ladaa; Ayman Nihad Abd Alrahman Jadi; and Fadi Ihab Muhammad Ramadan Hassouna.
It said “intelligence from multiple sources confirmed” that all were PIJ operatives, and that a list found during an operation in Gaza “explicitly identified four” of them as such.”
Despite having obviously read the IDF’s statement, the BBC chose not to provide readers with that publicly available information detailing the roles of the named terrorists and the PIJ list of operatives that includes their rank and military ID number.
Instead, Berg, Nader and Lukiv tell their readers that:
“The BBC has not been able to verify claims made by either side, with international media being prevented by Israel from entering and freely working on the ground in Gaza.”
Notably, despite not being “able to verify claims made by either side”, the BBC nevertheless chose to uncritically promote the claims of a terrorist organisation’s media arm in the headline and opening paragraphs of this report.
As has been the case in the past, this BBC report promotes statements from the CPJ.
“The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said it was “devastated by the reports” of five journalists being killed in the central Gaza Strip.
“Journalists are civilians and must always be protected,” it said. […]
As of 20 December, at least 133 Palestinian journalists have been killed during the course of the war, making it the deadliest conflict for journalists, according to the CPJ.
The press freedom organisation has called for accountability for Palestinian journalists who have been directly targeted by the Israeli military.”
As has been demonstrated on repeated occasions throughout the past fifteen months and before, contrary to that promoted CPJ claim, journalists in the Gaza Strip are not always civilians. Nevertheless, BBC journalists not only continue to show no interest whatsoever in the exploitation of their profession by terrorist organisations but actively promote the narrative whereby anyone who dons a press vest is a ‘journalist’.
The BBC’s report goes on to tell readers that:
“At least another five people were also reported killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza City on Wednesday.
The Palestinian Wafa news agency, and the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, also said a further 20 people were injured in the city’s al-Zeitoun neighbourhood.
The Israeli military has not commented on the reported bombing.”
Berg, Nader and Lukiv have nothing more to tell their readers and so despite the fact that their report was last amended on the morning of December 27th, BBC audiences have no way of knowing that – as reported by local media outlets – at least three of those “five people” were Hamas terrorists.
“The Israeli Air Force recently carried out a precision strike targeting two senior Hamas terrorists in Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces announced Thursday morning.
Muhammad Jamil Salman Basous, a senior operative in the Gaza City Brigade’s engineering unit, was involved in supplying explosives to terrorist operatives and storing explosive materials at his residence. Muhammad Kamal Muhammad Al-Haj, a Nukhba company commander in the Zeitoun Battalion, was responsible for sniper attacks against IDF forces.
Additionally, Mahmoud Jamil Salman Basous, a platoon commander in Hamas’ Shejaiya Battalion and the brother of Muhammad Jamil Salman Basous, was also killed in the strike.”
Once again we see that despite its supposed commitment to accurate and impartial reporting, the BBC rushes to amplify claims concerning incidents in the Gaza Strip which it has not independently verified and shows disturbingly little interest in providing its audiences with the facts when they emerge.
