Indy corrects false claim over terms of hostage deal

An article in the Independent (“Why the ceasefire hostage deal is stumbling at the final hurdle”, Dec. 16) by world affairs editor Sam Kiley erred in claiming that Israel only agreed to released “dozens” of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 33 Israeli hostages – living and dead – in the deal’s first phase:

“Under an agreement that the US, Hamas, lead mediators Qatar, and most Israelis believed had been done and dusted, 33 hostages were due to be released from Hamas imprisonment in return for dozens of Palestinians held by Israel over the next six weeks.”

Though the article was written three days before the ceasefire went into effect, at the time it was already known that up to 1,000 Palestinians terrorists, many whom are in prison for murdering Israeli civilians, would be released.

We contacted Indy editors to point out the error, and the complaint was swiftly upheld, with the sentence amended:

Under an agreement that the US, Hamas, lead mediators Qatar, and most Israelis believed had been done and dusted, 33 hostages were due to be released from Hamas imprisonment in return for hundreds of Palestinians held by Israel over the next six weeks.

Note that this is the third correction we prompted to articles written by Kiley since he began working for the Indy last month.
