Weekend long read

1) The ITIC reports on ‘Hamas’ strategy to destroy Israel: from theory into practice, as seen in captured documents’.

“Hamas documents taken from Gaza during the Gaza Strip War confirm what Hamas officials had publicly stated and indicate that the plan to eliminate the State of Israel had been regarded in recent years, especially after Operation Guardian of the Walls, by the Hamas leadership, especially Yahya al-Sinwar (as well as by its allies, Iran and Hezbollah), as executable and highly feasible in the near future. Those were not just empty words, they were backed by the development of practical plans and ongoing coordination between the elements of the “resistance axis.””

2) MEMRI documents ‘Hamas Calls To Increase Terror Attacks On Israelis During Ramadan’.

“Hamas regards its struggle against Israel as a religious war, and therefore ascribes importance to attacks on it especially during Ramadan, which it calls “the month of jihad and victories” and “the season of attacks.” This year, as in previous years, the movement has published many inciting materials calling to increase the attacks on Israelis during this month. […]

The incitement spread by Hamas includes practical advice on carrying out attacks, for instance how to recruit terrorists and organize them into secret cells, how to obtain weapons and engage in military training, and how to plan and execute the attack itself.”

3) At the INSS, Yoel Guzansky outlines ‘The Qatari Challenge’.

“Qatar’s support for Hamas and its investments in Gaza align closely with its broader foreign policy strategy, which has long included backing political Islamist movements. However, rather than being driven purely by ideological affinity, Qatar’s foreign policy is characterized more often by pragmatism—and at times opportunism—than by deep ideological commitment. The primary goal is to enhance its influence in the Middle East.”

4) At the Middle East Quarterly, Andrew Fox and Tatiana Glezer discuss ‘Misinformation Strategy and Media Bias in the Gaza War’.

“Throughout the war in Gaza, Israel has faced accusations of genocide—not only in the International Court of Justice but also in the court of public opinion where media narratives have amplified these claims. Our research has identified strategies that Hamas has used to shape perceptions of the conflict both within Gaza and in the international media. These efforts emphasize civilian suffering while downplaying Hamas’ role as an active combatant, significantly influencing how the conflict is understood globally.”

5) At the Alma Center, Sarit Zehavi argues that ‘UNFIL Must Leave Lebanon If It Cannot Restructure’.

“UNIFIL was explicitly tasked by Resolution 1701 with assisting the Lebanese army in enforcing these restrictions and has been authorized to take “all necessary action” to ensure that this area is not utilized for hostile activities in its area of operations.

However, in practice, UNIFIL has consistently failed to prevent Hezbollah from fortifying its positions in southern Lebanon. This pattern has continued into the current ceasefire period, with UNIFIL allowing the terrorist organization to build up its military infrastructure in direct violation of the ceasefire agreement.”
