BBC Arabic coverage of the recent International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) vote on a decision in favour of the “Gaza genocide” blood libel misled audiences on the subject of the number of IAGS members who took part in the vote.
Both the synopsis to a filmed report and a written article originally told readers that: [emphasis added]
“The decision […] passed with the support of 86% of the voters, who number 500 IAGS members”
However, as the BBC itself correctly reported in English:
“Out of its [the IAGS] 500 members, 28% took part in the vote and 86% of those who voted supported the resolution.”
In other words, less than a quarter of the IAGS members voted in favour of the decision: approximately 120 individuals.
Following communication from CAMERA Arabic, the BBC corrected both those Arabic language items. They now read:
“Out of its [the IAGS] members who number 500, 28% participated in the vote, with 86% of the voters supporting the decision.”
