Weekend long read

1) At the FDD, Toby Dershowitz and Asher Boiskin report on a conference co-hosted by a branch of Al Jazeera.

“Al Jazeera Centre for Studies, the research arm of Qatar’s state-backed media giant, co-hosted an academic conference last week in Qatar’s Education City that whitewashed Hamas’s October 7, 2023, massacre — where terrorists raped, mutilated, and murdered 1,200 people — and dismissed UN-verified sexual violence and other terrorist acts as Israeli fabrications.”

2) MEMRI provides documentation of statements made by Marwan Barghouti.

“Over 200 Western cultural figures have signed an open letter calling for the release of Palestinian Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti, who has been incarcerated in Israel since 2002, serving five life sentences for his role in planning several terror attacks that killed Israeli civilians during the Second Intifada.”

3) At the JISS, Avi Tal reports on ‘What the Palestinian and Arab Media Are Saying About Hussein al-Sheikh’s Appointment as Abu Mazen’s Designated Successor’.

“On October 26, 2025, Abu Mazen issued a presidential decree stating that Hussein al-Sheikh, deputy chairman of the PLO Executive Committee and deputy chairman of the Palestinian Authority, would temporarily serve as Chairman of the Palestinian Authority for 90 days if the office became vacant and in the absence of a legislative council.”

4) The Long War Journal reports: ‘IDF reveals Hamas financial network operating in Turkey’.

“The materials indicate that Hamas has constructed a sophisticated financial platform led by money changers—primarily Gazan expatriates living in Turkey—who have exploited Turkish banking and commercial infrastructure to fund terrorism. Israel assesses that these operatives managed large-scale economic activities, including the reception of Iranian capital, its laundering and storage, and the subsequent transfer of funds into Gaza and other Hamas-aligned nodes across the region.”

5) At the INSS, Sima Shein explains ‘The Deadlock Surrounding Iran’s Nuclear Program’.

“Iran is embroiled in an ongoing crisis with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as Iran does not allow it to inspect the sites struck during the 12-day war with Israel. It is also locked in a standoff with the United States, as Tehran refuses to renew negotiations—despite mediation efforts mainly by actors from the Gulf states—so long as the demand for zero enrichment remains in place.”

6) At WINEP, Aaron Y Zelin reports of the situation of ‘Christians in the New Syria’.

“Since the fall of the Assad regime a year ago, many have been worried about the fate and future of Christians in the new Syria. Overall, they are allowed to live and worship, but there have been a number of incidents where they have been targeted. These greater risks must be confronted by the new authorities but should be seen in concert with broader risks to all communities in Syria, including the majority population.”
