On consecutive days in mid-December 2025 the BBC News website published two reports about the dismissal of the chief executive of the charity Oxfam.
“Oxfam chief forced to step down after accusations of bullying” Joe Pike, 15/12/25
“Former Oxfam boss to sue charity over dismissal” Joe Pike, 16/12/25
Two months later, on February 13th, Channel 4 News published an interview with Dr Halima Begum.
“The former Chief Executive of Oxfam in the UK is taking legal action against the charity, accusing it of racism, sexism and antisemitism.
In an exclusive interview with this programme, Dr Halima Begum – who is Muslim – says she was forced to resign at the end of last year in a process she describes as a ‘witch hunt.’ She is now taking the charity to the Employment Tribunal.”
Among the media outlets to have reported on that interview is the Jewish News:
“The former head of Oxfam GB has accused the charity of having a “toxic antisemitic culture,” claiming it focused disproportionately on Gaza and pushed internally to describe Israel’s actions as “genocide” before, she said, the organisation had reached a position based on evidence and legal advice. […]
Begum said she became increasingly concerned that the charity was not applying the same standards to Gaza as it did to other humanitarian crises. “It’s important to work around the rule of law and to maintain that the international rule of law must not be compromised. But we have to show consistency with other crises that are taking place in the world,” she said. “It always felt that we were disproportionately working around the crisis in Gaza.”
She also described internal pressure to use the term genocide earlier than she believed was appropriate. “(There was) quite strong push back (within the organisation) when we were not ready yet to use the word ‘genocide’,” Begum said. “To use the word ‘genocide’, it has to be something we arrive at with consultation and evidence of good legal advice and try and use that term before we are ready as an organisation feels quite risky to me.””
CAMERA UK has been unable to find any BBC News website coverage of that Channel 4 News interview, despite Halima Begum having appeared in the corporation’s content on several occasions in the past and notwithstanding the BBC’s long-standing practice of quoting and promoting Oxfam statements, reports and campaigns while serially failing to meet its own editorial guidelines by informing audiences of the charity’s “affiliations, funding or particular viewpoints”.
In July 2025 the BBC promoted a campaign run by “170 charities”, including Oxfam, against the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
Also in July 2025, the BBC amplified a “joint statement” signed by “more than 100 international aid organisations”, including Oxfam, according to which their colleagues in the Gaza Strip were “wasting away”.
In August 2025 the BBC promoted another campaign by NGOs, including Oxfam, against Israeli regulations requiring security screening of employees working in the Gaza Strip.
Later in August 2025, BBC coverage of an IPC report claiming that part of the Gaza Strip was experiencing famine included the promotion of statements from NGOs including Oxfam but failed to disclose that Oxfam is an IPC partner.
Given its own willingness to uncritically amplify campaigns and statements promoted by Oxfam, one might have expected Halima Begum’s allegation of disproportionate focus on Gaza to have sparked some journalistic curiosity on the part of the BBC. Apparently, that is not the case.
