Weekend long read

1) The ITIC explains how ‘The terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip exploit the civilian infrastructure for terrorist activities’.

“The ongoing fighting and the expansion of the IDF’s activity to areas such as Rafah and Khan Yunis caused the terrorist organizations to forfeit military assets, and the use civilian facilities gained momentum, as did carrying out terrorist activity from within the population. The terrorist organizations use UNRWA facilities, shelters and humanitarian areas where displaced residents are located for terrorist activities.”

2) Writing at the Tablet, Andrew Fox gives his view of the IDF campaign in the Gaza Strip.

“Operations are, of course, severely hampered by the IDF’s remarkable efforts at civilian protection—a factor that condescending international media analysis either ignores or cynically uses as further evidence for the need to end the operation in line with Washington’s demands. The IDF has moved hundreds of thousands of people out of harm’s way, and it has sacrificed surprise to ensure civilians are protected. Of course Hamas fighters have moved to humanitarian zones along with the civilians. This is why they are “safer zones” rather than “safe zones”: The IDF reserve the right to strike Hamas fighters where they reasonably and proportionally can. It is unquestionable that the IDF’s extraordinary efforts to protect civilians have made the war far more difficult to fight. These are the actions of a moral army.”

3) MEMRI provides analysis of the situation in Judea & Samaria.

“Over the last two years, the terror threat emanating from the northern governorates of the West Bank has steadily increased. The various Palestinian terror organizations – chief of them Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), and Fatah’s military wing, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade – are consolidating their presence in the various governorates, while undermining the control and the rule of the Palestinian Authority (PA) there. As part of this, they are establishing infrastructure for terror and armed struggle against Israel, with Iranian assistance, and openly declaring their intention to fight Israel and even to carry out attacks on Israeli localities similar to Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack in southern Israel.”

4) At the ICT, Michael Barak discusses ‘The alliance between the al-Qaeda leadership and the Iranian regime’.

“The alliance between the Iranian regime and the al-Qaeda organization is not new and has been strengthening, especially since the end of 2022, following the appointment of Sheikh Seif al-Adel as the leader of the organization after the assassination of Sheikh Ayman al-Zawahiri. […] This alliance was further articulated on July 16, 2024, with the publication of an article by Sheikh Seif al-Adel, the leader of al-Qaeda, emphasizing the importance of establishing alliances among all armed Muslim nations and their involvement in a major campaign against the West and Israel, particularly in light of the war in Gaza. According to him, the campaign in Gaza represents an ongoing existential and religious struggle against all Muslims, within which the Western-Zionist alliance aims to dominate the world, starting with the Muslim world and then extending to the pagan world.”

5) On August 22nd, UK Lawyers for Israel will hold a webinar titled ‘Unravelling the ICJ Advisory Opinions’.

“On 19 July 2024, the Judges of the International Court of Justice gave their advisory opinions in the case titled “Legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem”.

Although the opinions are not binding and were given on the basis of documents provided by the UN of dubious accuracy and without hearing arguments in support of Israel, opponents of Israel regard them as putting wind in the sails of the BDS movement. […]

In this webinar, international law experts, Natasha Hausdorff and Olivia Flasch, will seek to elucidate what happened in the case and its implications.”
