Weekend long read

1) At The Hill, Natalie Ecanow asks ‘Is Qatar an ally or an enemy in the fight against terror finance?’.

“While financial crime can crop up anywhere, there is reason to believe that Qatar remains an oasis for terror finance.

Last year, the Financial Action Task Force — an international money laundering and terror finance watchdog — found that Qatar “has not demonstrated that it is effectively identifying, investigating, or prosecuting” terror financing cases. Qatar’s overall terror finance conviction rate is just 28 percent, which the task force notes is especially low, given the emirate’s risk profile and the Qatari “criminal system’s response to other financial crimes.” Indeed, Qatar hasn’t convicted a single terror financier since 2018.”

2) The ITIC provides information about ‘The Organizations Assisting Hezbollah in Combat Against Israel’.

“On October 8, 2023, following the Hamas terrorist attack and massacre carried out the previous day, Hezbollah opened a front against Israel from Lebanon “in support of the Gaza Strip.” Since the beginning of the fighting, Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Amal, al Jama’ah al-Islamiyya, the Lebanese Resistance Brigades and the Syrian Social-Nationalist Party have joined Hezbollah in the fighting, to a greater or lesser degree. […]

Although there are ideological and religious differences between Hezbollah and most of the other organizations, they have been cooperating since the days of the Israeli presence in south Lebanon and the Second Lebanon War.”

3) At the JCFA, Izabella Tabarovsky discusses ‘Hamas’s Capture of the West’s Sympathy, Attention, and Media’.

“The sight of an estimated 5,000 rioters marching across Manhattan carrying Hamas, Palestinian Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, and Hizbullah flags on Labor Day perplexed many. What could they be protesting against on a day after Hamas had murdered six Jews?

Yet, this wasn’t the first time an aggressive, in-your-face “pro-Palestinian” rally in the West followed a high-profile massacre of Jews in Israel. The first demonstrations in the immediate wake of the October 7, 2023, massacre condemned Israel and demanded sympathy and support for Gaza.”

4) MEMRI reports on ‘Criticism On Social Media Of Senior Hamas Official Khaled Mashal’s Calls For The Resumption Of Suicide Attacks Against Israel’.

“Hamas leader abroad Khaled Mashal recently joined in on the threats by Hamas’s military wing, the Izz Al-Din Al-Qassam Brigades, to resume carrying out suicide attacks in Israel. In an August 28, 2024 prerecorded speech aired at a conference in Istanbul that was organized by the Hamas-affiliated Al-Quds International Institute (QII), Mashal said: “We want to go back to martyrdom operations [i.e. suicide attacks].” He also called for “open conflict” with Israel that would consist of “all forms of resistance, headed by martyrdom attacks” and added, “We should reignite this spirit in the West Bank and in the 1948 borders” – that is, Israel.

Mashal’s speech stirred anger among Arab users on X, who asserted that he was sacrificing the Palestinian people and their cause while he lives in peace and riches in luxury hotels in Qatar.”

5) At UANI, Dror Doron documents ‘Nasrallah’s False Narrative of Success’.

“Hezbollah’s failed attempt to hit significant military targets in central Israel as a response to Israel’s targeted killing of Fuad Shukr, one of the organization’s top military commanders, opens a window that allows a peek into its thinking.

By now, Hezbollah, its affiliated media outlets in Lebanon, and its partners in the Iranian-led “Axis of Resistance” are all deeply invested in promoting a false narrative regarding the events.  Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s secretary-general, himself publicly claimed that his organization was able to hit military targets near Tel Aviv and that Israel is hiding the real damage. The narratives go further and stress that the massive preemptive Israeli airstrikes against Hezbollah missile launchers failed and did not have any influence on the organization’s retaliation plan.”
